Two-Vehicle Indiana Crash That Injured Three Blamed On Alcohol

March 15, 2012

A two-vehicle accident in Newburgh, Indiana, is responsible for sending three people to the hospital. According to reports from WFIE 14 News, the collision occurred just before 1:00 a.m. Thursday on Sharon Road, near Rose Drive.

Deputies with the Warrick County Sheriff’s Department stated that alcohol may have been a factor in why a 52-year-old man sideswiped the vehicle of a 32-year-old woman. Deputies say the two vehicles were passing one another when the collision happened.

Both the female victim and her teenage child, who was a passenger in her vehicle, were injured and taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center to receive treatment. The allegedly intoxicated driver was also taken to St. Mary’s to be treated for internal injuries stemming from the accident.

Deputies say that charges against the drunken driver are pending the outcome of a full investigation into the crash. He could face charges of reckless driving or vehicular assault, as well as charges for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Statistics from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that one-third of all fatal accidents in the state of Indiana in 2009 were associated with alcohol.

With St. Patrick’s Day this coming Saturday, the Indiana DUI Accident Attorneys with Woods and Woods Injury Lawyers are asking that we all contribute to keeping the state’s highways safe over the holiday by refraining from getting behind the wheel if you have been drinking.

Owensboro Teen Suffers Spinal Injury During Post-Game Celebration

March 8, 2012

An Owensboro, Kentucky, girl was severely injured during a celebration after her high school basketball team won a game in dramatic fashion. According to reports from Channel 14 News, the accident happened Monday night in the Apollo High School gymnasium.

The Apollo and Muhlenberg County teams were tied with under a second left to play when the home team scored and clinched the victory. Fans immediately began to rush onto the court in celebration. The victim lost her footing, fell into the crowd, and was trampled by other fans. The girl’s father was watching from the stands and saw her lying on the floor and rushed to her side. He was able to use his training as an emergency responder to help her after she told him she couldn’t feel her legs.

She was rushed to the local hospital where she remained for several days. By Tuesday morning, she had regained some feeling in her legs and was able to walk, but was later taken to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky after doctors determined she might have a spinal injury.

Those who witnessed the incident said that the fans rushing the floor could have been prevented if more security staff had been present.

The Owensboro Spinal Cord Injury Lawyers with Woods and Woods Injury Lawyers wish the young lady who was hurt in this horrible accident a full and speedy recovery from her injuries.

Professional Wrestler Sues Opponent, Coliseum, and Promoter After Serious Injury

March 1, 2012

A professional wrestler is suing an Evansville-based promoter and his opponent after he suffered a kick to the groin during a match that caused his testicle to burst. According to Channel 14 News, the incident occurred during a match last June at the Evansville Coliseum.

The lawsuit, filed at the Clark Circuit Court Monday, claims that the victim’s opponent strayed from a pre-determined script when he kicked him in the groin. The victim says that he tried to reduce the swelling with an ice pack, but went to Clark Memorial Hospital the next day, where doctors determined the testicle had burst and needed to be removed.

The man’s attorneys have named Coliseum Championship Wrestling in the lawsuit for not properly training the other wrestler after he failed to rehearse the events of the match prior to going into the ring.

The lawsuit is seeking compensation for legal fees and unspecified damages for medical expenses associated with the injury, as well as complications he may develop later on as a result of the injury, including erectile dysfunction, loss of testosterone, loss of sex drive, and osteoporosis.

Kentucky Man Injured After Rolling Dump Truck

February 23, 2012

A 29-year-old man from Greenville, Kentucky, is facing charges after being involved in an accident while driving a dump truck. According to reports from Channel 14 News, the accident happened Wednesday around 9:30 a.m. in the eastbound lane of U.S. Route 62, five miles east of Dawson Springs.

Reports from troopers with the Kentucky State Police Department who were called to the scene said the man was driving the dump truck when the passenger side tires dropped onto the shoulder of the highway. The driver then overcorrected by jerking the wheel back towards the road, causing the vehicle to roll onto its side into oncoming lanes of traffic.

The truck’s driver, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, was injured and taken by ambulance to the local hospital for treatment. Troopers say he has been charged with:

  • operating a commercial motor vehicle without a Commercial Driver’s License,
  • no medical certificate in driver’s possession,
  • operating a commercial motor vehicle without periodic inspection,
  • and not having a fire extinguisher onboard.

The Kentucky Truck Accident Lawyers with Woods and Woods Injury Lawyers know that dump trucks operate under the same restrictions as tractor-trailers, and drivers who operate vehicles without the proper paperwork are subject to legal ramifications.

That’s why the firm says it’s so important to immediately contact an attorney after seeking medical assistance if you are involved in an accident with a dump truck.

Two Injured and One Killed In Tragic Spottsville Crash

February 16, 2012

A 29-year-old firefighter, husband, and father of three was tragically killed in a two-car accident in Henderson County, Kentucky, Tuesday night. According to reports from Channel 14 News, the accident occurred around 5:30 PM on Highway 60 in Spottsville, Kentucky.

Reports from the Henderson County Sheriff’s Department indicate that two men were attempting to make a left turn out of a driveway along the highway when they pulled out in front of the victim’s pickup truck. Skid marks on the asphalt indicate the driver of the vehicle that was exiting the driveway overcorrected and struck the victim’s pickup truck head-on.

The 58-year-old driver and his 27-year-old passenger were seriously injured in the crash and were rushed to St. Mary’s Hospital, where they remain in serious condition. The driver of the pickup truck died at the scene.

The Henderson County Sherriff’s Department cannot confirm it yet, but did say that the 58-year-old driver may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. Sheriffs say that charges against the driver are pending the outcome of an investigation into the crash.

Statistics show that alcohol plays a role in as many as 50% off all crashes along highways in the United States.

The Kentucky Auto Accident Attorneys with Woods and Woods Injury Lawyers would like to send their thoughts to the families of all that were involved in this horrific crash.

Confusion Over Response Location May Have Contributed Woman’s Death

February 9, 2012

Confusion over what location police should report to may have played a part in a woman’s death Monday afternoon. According to reports from Channel 14 News, officers responding to 911 calls went to another location by the same name as the woman’s car burned, causing her to die of smoke inhalation.

The confusion stems from two different Fickas Roads on the outskirts of Evansville, Indiana. One of the Roads is just north of Highway 164, while the other is off a gravel road near of field south of 164.

Neighbors reported the burning vehicle to 911 at around 12:32 in the afternoon, but units responded to the wrong location. It wasn’t until nearly a half hour later that rescue crews arrived at the scene of the burning car. By that time it was engulfed in flames and the 73-year-old driver was dead. It was determined that the woman died of smoke inhalation.

Had units arrived sooner, there is a good possibility the woman’s life could have been saved.

The confusion was only complicated by a recent change of jurisdiction over the area where the accident occurred that could have led to firefighters with the Evansville Fire Department being unfamiliar with the area.

Kentucky State Law Enforcement Has A Busy Month

February 2, 2012

Kentucky State Police have been quite successful in battling road dangers, such as speeding, lack of seat belts, and intoxicated drivers, that motorists face on the state’s highways for the past month. According to Channel 14 News, in January alone, 766 citations were issued to drivers and 44 impaired driving arrests were made.

In addition to those arrests and tickets 238 criminal arrests were made and a total of 2,100 citations were issued across seven counties. Other highlights included:

  • 121 Seat belt citations
  • 9 Child restraint citations
  • 67 Traffic crashes investigated
  • 189 Stranded motorists assisted
  • 819 Responses to calls for service
  • 50 Opened criminal cases

Only three lives were lost in fatal traffic accidents in the district in the month of January. A lack of seat belt use was reported as a contributing factor to deaths involved in two of the fatal crashes.

Law enforcement says that they credit the low number of fatalities to the high police presence on highways in the district over the past month. They hope that these numbers will help with increasing state funding for more campaigns in the area, with more patrols and sobriety checkpoints.

The Kentucky auto accident attorneys with Woods and Woods Injury Lawyers are thankful for all that area law enforcement does to keep our highways safe and can only encourage motorists to do their part in keeping the roads safe by slowing down and buckling up. Town Mourns Two Kentucky Teens Killed In Single-Vehicle Crash

January 26, 2012

The whole town of Taylorsville, Kentucky, paused today to remember two area teens who were killed in a single-vehicle crash on Wednesday afternoon. Reports from WAVE 3 News say that the accident happened just after 3:00 PM at the intersection of the rural Mike Brown Road and Kentucky 1633.

Kentucky State Police Spokesman Trooper Ronald Turley said that lack of seat belts, speeding, and texting while driving are to blame for the crash.

Reports from the incident show that 1990 Ford pickup truck driven by the teenage girl veered off the road and into a 6 to 7-foot deep ravine. The truck then flipped several times, ejecting the driver and a passenger who were not wearing seat belts. Both girls were declared dead at the scene. A third passenger in the vehicle survived the crash and was taken by helicopter to University Hospital, where she remains with serious injuries.

Speed and a lack of wearing seat belts are leading factors in fatal teenage motor vehicle accidents, and the more passengers in an experienced driver’s car, the more danger and risk is involved. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say that the risk of an accident grows exponentially with each additional passenger in a vehicle with 16 and 17-year-old drivers.

Kentucky Trucker Dies In Tragic Accident At Iowa Warehouse

January 19, 2012

A 50-year-old truck driver from Owensboro, Kentucky, was killed Tuesday night in an accident outside a warehouse. According to reports from Channel 14 News, the accident occurred between 8:15 and 8:45 PM at the Estes Warehouse on W. River Drive in Davenport, Iowa.

Reports from the incident say that the man was working alone in the warehouse yard hooking up a dolly to a trailer. He was standing between the dolly and the trailer, when suddenly, the trailer rolled back and pinned the man between it and the dolly. The man was trapped there for nearly 30 minutes before help arrived. The man was taken by ambulance to Genesis East Medical Center, but died shortly after arriving from injuries sustained in the crash.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has data showing that the transportation industry is second only to construction for the highest number of worker fatalities. Trucking saw a 2% increase in the number of fatalities last year, with specialized freight trucking seeing an even more substantial jump of 17%. The industry as a whole accounted for the deaths of 633 people in 2010.

It’s because of these dangers that the Kentucky Truck Accident Lawyers with Woods and Woods Injury Lawyers recommend that truckers follow all regulations and safety procedures while on the job. If you are hurt, seek medical attention and then consult an attorney.

Eight Kentucky Cities Promote Walking And Biking To School

January 5, 2012

In an effort to get Kentucky’s children to participate in a more active lifestyle, the government has allocated more than $1 million to school systems in eight cities across the state to fund programs that will allow children to safely walk and bike to school. According to the Tristate Homepage, the program is called “Safe Routes To Schooland is federally funded through the Department of Transportation (DOT).

The money will be available to each city for funding projects that will make biking and walking to school a safer option for children, such as: building better bike lanes, crosswalks near schools, and sponsoring programs that get parents and children to walk to school together.

The program is being heavily supported as children walking and biking to school is on a sharp and steady decline in the state through recent years. Research has shown that today, less than 15 percent of all students walk or ride the bus to school.

School districts in Henderson, Kentucky, have already said that they will use their share of the money ($200,000) to build a new bike and pedestrian path near Sand Lane.

The Kentucky auto accident attorneys with Woods and Woods Injury Lawyers are happy to see the state not only making an effort to help keep our children safe, but also teaching them healthier and greener alternatives to transportation. The firm applauds the program and hopes to see similar projects in the future.
