1. Q: What is Veterans Compensation?
   A: Veterans Compensation is money provided to veterans based on an injury or illness that either occurred during or was made worse by service in the military.

2. Q: Can I receive Veterans Benefits while I am working?
   A: Yes.
   

3. Q: Can I receive Veterans Benefits while I am receiving Social Security?
   A: Yes.
   

4. Q: I am a Vietnam veteran with diabetes and diabetes related health problems. Should I call Woods and Woods?
   A: Yes. Many Vietnam veterans were exposed to Agent Orange. Agent Orange is known to cause diabetes. There both your diabetes and your diabetes related health problems are compensable under Veterans Benefits.
   

5. Q: I have medical problems but I am not sure these problems are related to my military service. Should I call Woods and Woods?
   A: Yes. Don’t assume anything—call Woods and Woods. Some Vietnam vets suffer from depression and have had issues with alcohol abuse. At first glance, those problems may not seem related to military service, but we have found in some cases the veteran is suffering from a posttraumatic stress disorder resulting from their military service.
   

6. Q: Is there any harm in waiting to call Woods and Woods?
   A: Yes. You can run into issues if you wait. Also, the VA is slow—don’t wait.
   

7. Q: What kind of coverage can veterans expect under Veterans Compensation?
   A: Anywhere from 10% to 100%, depending on the disability involved. In some instances more than 100% is awarded.

9. Q: How does a veteran qualify for Veterans Compensation?
   A: A veteran must meet three different criteria to qualify:
   1) must have a current medically diagnosed disability
   2) have had a precipitating disease or injury that occurred while serving in the military
   3) disability must be related to the injury that occurred during service time.

10. Q: How is the effective date of a disability award determined?
    A: Both the date the last claim was submitted by the regional office and the date the disability became obvious, problematic, or symptomatic are considered.

11. Q: What is Veterans Pension?
    A: Veterans Pension is given to some veterans who served in war time and are disabled. Veterans Pension is needs based, and the money involved is considerably less than that given through Veterans Compensation.
    
    To qualify for Veterans Pension a veteran must have served for at least 90 days and been in a war for at least 1 day.
    
    For those serving after 9/7/80, they must have served for at least 24 months, be permanently disabled, or over 65 years of age.

12. Q: What is the definition of a veteran in regard to VA disability?
    A: A veteran is defined as “a person who served in the active military, naval, or air services, and who was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable,” according to 38 U.S.C. 101(2), 38 CFR 3.1(d) 2006.

13. Q: What is an “RO?”
    A: “RO” stands for “Regional Office.” There are regional offices throughout the country. These offices are where initial disability claims are filed and the ratings determination is made as to what kind of disability compensation a veteran should receive.

14. Q: What is a “ratings decision?”
    A: A ratings decision is made by the regional office after your application for veterans benefits has been filed. This decision addresses your service connection, percentage of disability, and date of eligibility.
