Veterans in North Carolina are eligible for the same federal VA benefits as vets in any other state. However, each state also offers some of its own unique benefits for veterans who are considered disabled by the VA. While some benefits are available only for 100% disabled veterans in North Carolina, most are available to other veterans with lower disability ratings. We share some of these state benefits below.

Veteran housing benefits
The North Carolina Housing Agency offers three programs for veterans homebuyers in the state.
First, the NC Home Advantage Mortgage program pays up to 3% of a veteran’s loan amount in down payment help.
Veterans may also qualify for a bigger boost through the NC 1st Home Advantage Down Payment, which offers $15,000 in assistance.
Finally, the NC Home Advantage Tax Credit enables qualified veterans and first time homebuyers to save $2,000 each year on federal taxes with a Mortgage Credit Certificate.
Down payment options are offered 0% deferred loans and forgivable over time. Reduced by 20% per year at the end of years 11-15.
The North Carolina Housing Agency also finances programs for veterans not buying a new home but instead repairing a current one or making it more accessible for their health needs. More information is available online.
Veteran property tax benefits
Veterans with a 100%, permanent and total service-connected VA disability or who are receiving specially adapted housing grants through the VA may be eligible for a veteran homestead exemption. This exemption can total up to the first $45,000 of their assessed real property value.
Unmarried surviving spouses may also qualify for these same property tax benefits if the spouse’s veteran meets the above qualifications, or died due to a service-connected illness.
North Carolina income tax benefits
Each state handles military retirement income differently. If you are a veteran in North Carolina receiving military retired pay, this income will not be taxed as of 2021. If retroactively filing for a prior year, you will need to speak with a tax specialist.
Veteran vehicle registration benefits
Veterans in North Carolina with a 100% VA disability rating are eligible for free disabled veteran license plates. These plates authorize the veteran to use handicapped parking spaces.
The state also offers 16 styles of plates for other veterans including options for former POWs, Purple Heart recipients, and each branch of the military for a fee.
Veteran education benefits
North Carolina has several state-level education benefits designed for veterans and service members, as well as offering resources for veterans on college campuses around the state and scholarships opportunities to survivors and dependents.
Notably, qualifying children of veterans may be eligible for the North Carolina Scholarship for Children of Wartime Veterans. Eligibility is based on the child’s life-long residency in the state or the veteran living in North Carolina when enlisting in the military.
Additionally, North Carolina offers special scholarships for Vietnam veterans and a program designed to give resident tuition rates to veterans who receive VA benefits but are not from the state.
At a federal level, veterans can apply for assistance through the G.I. Bill and may be entitled to additional educational benefits through the VA.
Veteran hunting and fishing licenses
Veterans in North Carolina with at least a 50% disability rating are eligible for hunting and fishing licenses at a reduced price.
The price of the license may depend on the veterans disability rating and what type of license the veteran wishes to purchase.
