From our Boss, Who Doesn’t Like It When We Call Him our Boss
Hi, I’m Neil Woods and I personally wrote this blog post because someone told me they “don’t want to work at a stuffy old law firm.” Everyone has heard at least one horror story about working for lawyers. They’re moody, rude, greedy, yell at their staff, and worse.
Not at my law firm. When you walk through my law firm you’ll see the staff smiling. I genuinely think we have made work about as much fun as you can (while still getting lots accomplished!). We all spend way too much time at work to hate our jobs.
You probably imagine a law firm of lawyers in suits. Nope. I have never worn a suit to work and you won’t have to either. Woods & Woods has a very laid-back atmosphere. We wear jeans and T-shirts. More people at my office wear a Snuggie at their desk than a suit. I’m not necessarily proud of the Snuggie wearing but it’s true.
Our entire staff is dedicated to serving disabled veterans who are fighting the VA for benefits. This isn’t a job where you just push papers around, you get to change people’s lives. Fighting for those that served our country means you can have a meaningful career.
I understand why you come to work every day – to support your family. Woods & Woods is extremely family-friendly. As you’ll see below in the perks section, I try to give my staff a lot of flexibility with their schedules and lots of vacation days. Some positions even have four day work weeks – seriously!
Here’s my absolute favorite perk: an all-expense paid vacation to Hawaii every five years for every employee and one person of their choice. This perk isn’t reserved for top-level executives. This perk is given to everyone including my receptionists, cleaning staff, administrative assistants, you name it – everyone from the CEO to the janitor is important. Why a free trip to Hawaii you ask? Because it’s something most people would never do for themselves if I just handed them another bonus check. I encourage my staff to travel, schedule week-long vacations, and go experience life. We do not exist just to go to work.
If you’re a happy and hardworking person I fully encourage you to apply for a job at my law firm. I promise you will be treated with nothing but respect. There’s a reason why so many of my staff members have stuck around for ten, fifteen, and even over twenty years. If your current boss is disrespectful, if your current job is unfulfilling, if you’re unhappy with your career, I can offer you something different.
Come join my team of over 100 awesome people.

Perks and Benefits of Working at Woods and Woods, The Veteran’s Firm
The Fun Committee
Yes, the Fun Committee is actually a thing at Woods & Woods. I can almost assure you we are the only law firm in the country with a so-called Fun Committee. The Fun Committee is responsible for, uh, well, making fun. They run activities like field day at the office, Christmas parties, winery trips on coach buses, birthday parties, family day at an Otter’s baseball game, family night at Bob Walther’s Golf n’ Fun, office Bingo, and some other great things I’m forgetting about. Because of all these activities, you’ll get to know your co-workers and their families. It’s also important to let loose with your co-workers and blow off a little steam.

Time-Off
- 10 Paid Vacation Days: Go somewhere far away and get paid at the same time. Vacation days will be prorated during your first year of employment. Your number of vacation days increases over time.

Office Hours
- 36.5 Hours Per Week: 40 hours a week is for the birds. Go spend a few extra hours with your family.
- Flextime: Some staff like working early and leaving early while other staff members like getting to work later and leaving later. Most positions at Woods and Woods offer flextime.
- Summer Hours: The weather is nice and you would probably rather be near a pool – we get it! During the summer we allow most positions to come in early and leave early. This perk is especially beneficial to staff when the kids are home for summer break.
- No Weekends Required: You will never be required to work on the weekends, so go do something new. Try kayaking instead? Maybe read a good book? Your weekend. Your choice.
- After Hours Not Required: This is not the type of law firm that asks employees to work after hours or burn the midnight oil. Your grass probably needs to be mowed anyway.
- Four Day Work Week: Some positions like Case Managers can start a four day work week after 90 days of employment. Unfortunately, this is not offered for all positions.
- Friday Hours: T.G.I.F. We love what we do, but everyone needs a break. The office closes an hour early on Fridays.

- Christmas Bonus: Everyone gets a Christmas bonus and we always hand them out before Black Friday so you can get the kiddos some presents. Don’t forget to buy yourself something nice – you earned it!
- Extra Bonus Program: Our staff works hard and periodically we issue unannounced bonuses. My family tries to give back to our employees when we can.

Retirement Benefits
- 401(k) with American Funds: Woods and Woods will match up to 4% of your salary for your 401(k), with financial advising through Raymond James. I want you to retire from my law firm one day. We work hard to build lifelong employees.
Life Insurance
We offer all employees a life insurance policy of $20,000. There is no charge for this – it is just one small benefit of working at Woods & Woods.
The Old Jail in Downtown Evansville
You’re probably wondering how is the office building a perk? When you visit us you’ll understand. The Old Jail is a historic building in downtown Evansville and it’s a really unique place to work. Our staff members love walking to Main Street for lunch. If the weather is nice you can stroll along the riverfront or bike down the Greenway. You can also easily head over the YMCA downtown during your lunch break.
Our Hiring Process
Step One: Pre-Employment Testing
First, we ask applicants to take some basic online tests. The first exam is a basic proficiency test. The second test is a personality profile. Why do we do a personality profile? Some people are better suited for some jobs than others. We are going to examine your personality profile to make sure this is a job you are actually going to like. The personality profile focuses on your strengths, not your weaknesses.
Step Two: Telephone Interview
If you pass the basic testing we perform a telephone interview. Our clients are nationwide and it’s important to have good communication skills. You really can’t study for this step, just be yourself.
Step Three: Past Employment Verification
We will reach out to your former employers and check your employment dates. It would be helpful if you included their phone numbers on your resume.
Step Four: Job Offer
If you reach this step, congratulations! You have a new career that you’re going to love. I promise that my family and staff will treat you well.
