VA disability benefits in South Carolina
Veterans in South Carolina are eligible for the same federal VA benefits as veterans in any other state, including disability, health care, and more. However, each state also offers some of its own unique benefits for veterans who the VA considers disabled.
While some benefits are available only for 100% disabled veterans in South Carolina, most are available to other veterans with lower disability ratings. We share some of these state benefits below.
Veteran home loan/mortgage benefits in South Carolina
South Carolina does not have state home loan or mortgage benefits. Qualifying veterans can apply with the VA for a home loan.
South Carolina veteran property tax benefits
South Carolina veterans who are deemed totally and permanently disabled by the VA may qualify to receive a property tax exemption on home and land up to five acres.
Additionally, veterans who received the Medal of Honor or were formerly POWs can receive a property tax exemption for their home and up to one acre of land.
South Carolina veteran income tax benefits
Basic military retirement pay awarded based on age or service length is taxable and must be included as income for federal income taxes.
However, military disability retirement pay received as a pension, annuity or similar allowance for personal injury or sickness resulting from active service should not be included in taxable income if the veteran meets the qualifications.
Veteran vehicle registration benefits in South Carolina
Qualifying veterans in South Carolina can request a special military license plate or disabled license plate. Veterans must present a DD214 to be eligible, and the cost is the normal registration fee.

Veteran education benefits in South Carolina
Children of qualifying veterans are eligible for tuition waivers at state-funded colleges, universities, or post-high school technical education schools. Those accepted into an early college credit program prior to graduating high school may also qualify for tuition fee waivers.
Those who qualify for the financial aid must meet specific residency requirements in the state of South Carolina.
Veterans should also be eligible to pay in-state tuition and fee levels in South Carolina regardless of how long they have lived there.
In addition, veterans in South Carolina can apply for federal assistance through the G.I. Bill. They and their families may also be entitled to other educational benefits through the VA.
Veteran hunting and fishing licenses in South Carolina
Individuals who have been state residents for at least one year and are receiving disability benefits qualify for a free hunting and fishing license. This includes disabled veterans receiving VA disability payments.
The license is valid for freshwater fishing, saltwater fishing, state hunting, big game, wildlife management areas, and the migratory waterfowl permit. Eligible veterans who receive this license will also be given a free base set of deer tags each year.
Other benefits for disabled veterans in South Carolina
South Carolina has five state veterans nursing homes. The homes provide “skilled and intermediate” care for veterans. You may be eligible for financial assistance from the VA for care in one of these homes.
South Carolina also offers a veterans hiring preference for state employment, as well as the usual hiring preference for federal government positions.
VA facilities in South Carolina
Below we share information about where to find VA facilities in South Carolina including regional offices, medical facilities, Vet Centers and VA cemeteries.
VA regional offices in South Carolina
Each state has at least one VA regional office (VARO) that provides in-person services to help veterans with VA benefits and claims. Offices also offer information about veteran medical help, education and career counseling, memorial benefits, aid for homeless veterans, and more. Below is a list of VAROs in South Carolina.
VetSuccess offices in South Carolina
VetSuccess on campus (VSOC) offices are located on college campuses around South Carolina and the country. These partnerships between schools and the VA aid veterans in obtaining educational benefits and find their best path forward when seeking a degree.
VA medical facilities in South Carolina
VA medical facilities offer medical information and assistance for veterans. Vets may also receive their compensation and pension (C&P) exam at many of these facilities. The VA uses the information gathered at a C&P exam to determine how severe a veteran’s condition is and whether it is service connected. Below is a list of VA medical facilities in South Carolina.
Vet Centers in South Carolina
Vet Centers provide veterans with counseling and referral services, many of which are community-based. These centers also offer services for family members of veterans.
VA cemeteries in South Carolina
VA cemeteries can be found all over the U.S. and are dedicated resting places for those who honorably served their country. Veterans or families can make arrangements to be laid to rest in a VA cemetery. Qualifying spouses of veterans may also be eligible. You can find eligibility requirements for VA cemeteries here. Below is a list of all VA cemeteries in South Carolina.
